The
Milwaukee Common Council Chamber is one of the most beautiful
and spacious assembly halls in the world. The Chamber was
a sensation when City Hall was opened in 1895. The many motifs
and decorative elements of the room including the classic
Greek Ionian columns all portray the theme of Human Endeavor
and Progress. Two magnificent stained-glass windows - - one
that incorporates the images of City Hall and the Milwaukee
City Seal; the other portraying the State Capitol and the
Great Seal of Wisconsin - - were created as a WPA project
during the Great Depression and installed in the Council Chamber
48 years later. Beautiful stained glass windows also adorn
the walls behind the ornate Wisconsin-oak proscenium and dais
of the Council President's desk and, below it, the oak counter
of the City Clerk. Free tours of City Hall and the Common
Council Chamber are available for groups. Call 414-286-2266.
