Central
Library, headquarters of the City of Milwaukee Public Library
system, is one of Milwaukee's most beautiful and most-visited
historic landmark buildings. Built between 1895 and 1898,
it features a combination of French and Italian Renaissance
styles. A $10.4 million renovation was completed in 2000,
giving the public better access to collections, state-of-the-art
technology and a pleasant, conducive environment for using
the most extensive electronic and print resources in the state.
More than half a million people visit the library each year,
using resources which include more than 100 computers with
Internet access, 1.3 million books and 9,000 magazines and
newspapers, as well as thousands of videos, CDs, audiocassettes,
and DVDs. The Betty Brinn Children's Room is a popular destination
for families. The Bookseller used book store and Coffee With
a Conscience Coffee Shop is located on the first floor.The
Friends of the Library provide free tours every Saturday at
1:30 p.m., starting in the rotunda.
